MIRACLES... do they still arouse interest ?

Pilgrims to Lourdes hear more spoken about the "Message", renewal and
conversion than supernatural phenomena. And the sick come here, on the
whole, seeking courage in suffering, rather than restoration of health by
heavenly intervention.

Nevertheless, public opinion inseparately links Lourdes with miracles. This
applies especially to those who do not come.

Hence the interest in miracles continues. This is natural, because miracles
have happened and still do. For this reason, many books and articles on
them have been written in more or less good faith, but often containing
more fiction than fact.

This book, which it is my pleasure to recommend to you, is a review of the
miracles recognised as such by the Church. As distinct from a literary
work, it is a scientific survey in a serious and formal style. It makes a
clean sweep of errors spoken about, or written down, so many times in the
past. It also emphasises again the forceful words of my predecessor, Mgr
Theas: "Lourdes needs only the truth".

That is the sole purpose of this book, a book with a fascination and a
quiet eloquence of its own.

The author, Dr. Mangiapan, President of the Medical Bureau, in addition to
his routine commitments, has edited this precise, concise and factual book.
In it he has fulfilled the need to invalidate gilded myths, and to
challenge sceptics in a dispassionate way. I do not know how to thank him
sufficiently.

In perusing this book you will see abundantly clearly how marvellous is the
mercy of God.

Henri Donze Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes.

PREFACE

It often happens that even the best of intentions, the most desirable
undertakings, are not well received! At the very least, one does not
succeed in getting by persuasion the help one requires and would dearly
love to obtain.

Then suddenly (under whose influence I'll pass over!), everything falls
into place, takes shape, and ones original project comes alight!

It has been like that for this collection of miraculous cures of Lourdes,
this album of extremely precious photographs, which you now hold in your
hands, and will be able to browse through whenever and wherever you so
decide. It contains all the sick men and women, whose cure has been
recognized by the Magisterium of the Church as being a sign from God. In
the first place Sign of His omnipotence, but Sign of His merciful Love too,
thanks to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who appeared to
Bernadette in the Grotto of Massabielle almost 130 years ago.

What is my objective, my purpose ? To spread further afield information
about the full list of those whom the official Church has carefully
considered and recognized as the recipients of an intervention of God!

All the cures of Lourdes could not be included in it. That would require an
encyclopedia! And even then, it would certainly be incomplete!

So, as I love to repeat, we are all "miracles"! In fact, all of us have
been aware of something happening, at least once in our lifetime, some
event (a meeting or an occasion) which seemed to us "extraordinary" (in
various ways unexpected, remarkable, exceptional), in which we thought we
recognized a divine favor or intervention.

But then, you will say to me, why only 64 Lourdes' miracles recognized by
the Church since 1858 ? This is not the place to discuss that, so I refer
you to other articles on this matter.

Always remember that the investigation of a miraculous cure at Lourdes is a
long and exhaustive affair. In fact it entails a process of collecting and
evaluating information in two stages.

The first consists of the study, analysis and examination of the events
relating to physical health; these are carried out and certified by the
medical officers from the evidence of witnesses and the essential documents
provided for them.

This is an "objective medical assessment". At its best, this assessment by
experts can lead to the recognition of a cure as "certain, definitive and
inexplicable".

The second stage is that of discernment by the Church, which only follows
after the recovery of health has been confirmed as proven and permanent.
This stage does not automatically take place.

After all that, if a formal request is made to the Bishop of the Diocese to
which the sick person belongs, he judges it by the strict code of canonical
practice, then decides whether divine intervention underlies the
inexplicable cure. Finally he invites the People of Cod to recognise in it
a "Miracle" and a Sign from God.

Thus it is apparent (and obviously so!) that there is a long way to travel
before such a recognition can be arrived at.

I must even say that the times when this discernment has actually been
achieved have, in the history of Lourdes, been very rare.

Since the very first cures, that is since 1858, detailed statistics reveal
that:

--the first seven miracles were decreed by Mgr Laurence in January 1862

--the next 33 were put forward by 23 bishops between 1907-1914

-- the last 24 were declared by 20 bishops between 1946-1979.

There have always been many cures. At least 2,000 of these were classed as
extraordinary (or inexplicable) by the doctors since the beginning in 1858.

Here as elsewhere, one must admit that the human limitations of spokesmen
for the Magisterium of the Church prevent them from bringing about a
complete and irreproachable discernment of ALL the interventions of God.

The depositions of Cardinal Lambertini, the renowned Canonist who drew up
the code for miraculous cures, apply to Lourdes too!

This man of genius, particularly well-informed and advised, cannot be even
suspected of any irreverence towards the Church, for in 1740 he became Pope
Benedict XIV.

And yet he dared to write:

"An event may well be miraculous in reality, and before God, but not so in
the eyes of the Church"

To end this preamble, I quote a statement by the philosopher H. Dumery,
from his article on "Miracles" in the "Encyclopaedia Universalis":

"A miracle is seen as a salvific event of Revelation, and not just as a
physical or cosmic anomaly which, outside of its context in history faith
and religion, would only be considered bizarre".

Despite the intentional absence of any commentary this book will help us to
dispense with many obsolete ideas about miracles.

No, it is not "faith which produces miracles", but faith which recognises
them.

No, a miracle is not a "defiance of science".

"A miracle is only a manifestation, more astounding than usual, of the
rapport between God and His suffering creatures, in which those who believe
see God working in a special way, displaying a superabundance of divine
love... ". (Fr. X. Leon-Dufour).

For all the purposes God will think fit to make fruitful!

Dr. Th. Mangiapan (President of the Medical Bureau of Lourdes)

Mrs Catherine LATAPIE

Born in 1820

Lived in Loubajac, near to Lourdes. Cured 1st. March 1858 in her 39th year.
Miracle on 18th. January 1862, by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes.

This was the first cure. The date is unquestionable.

At the time of the Apparitions, Catherine LATAPIE lived at Loubajac, a few
kilometers from Lourdes. She had injured her right hand after a fall from a
tree, in October 1856; in addition, she was at the end of her third(?)
pregnancy.

This accident caused a subluxation of the humerus, which was easily
reducible, but owing to the traumatic stretching of the brachial plexus,
she was left with an ulnar type of paralysis. She could not use the last
two fingers of her right hand, which were held in typical palmar flexion.

During the night between the 28th. February and the 1st. March, 1858,
Catherine LATAPIE was moved by a sudden impulse . She rose at three in the
morning, woke her young children and set off for Lourdes.

Arriving there at dawn, she met Bernadette, went to the Grotto and knelt
down to pray. Then with all simplicity, she bathed her hand in the little
hollow which had already collected water from the Spring.

Straightaway her fingers returned to normal. They had regained their
movements and suppleness. She could flex and extend them with the same
facility as she could before the accident.

With haste she returned home, and the same evening--(it is this detail
which enables us to be sure of the date of the cure)--she gave birth to her
third child. He was ordained a priest in 1882.

In his report for Mgr Laurence, Prof. Vergez classed this case amongst the
cures "presenting a supernatural character".

Louis BOURIETTE

Born in 1804

Lived in Lourdes. Cured in March 1858, in his 55th. year. Miracle on 18th
January 1862, by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes.

This cure is the one most often quoted in the history of Lourdes. Although
usually considered the first, in actual fact there is evidence that it
could not have happened before the first days of March (cf. Laurentin).

Louis BOURIETTE was a quarryman's laborer, living and working in Lourdes.
In 1858 he had been afflicted with a complete loss of vision in the right
eye for two years. This serious disturbance resulted from an accident in
the mine, which 19 years before had irreversibly injured his eye, and
killed his brother Joseph, who was at his side.

Dr. Dozous, the first Medical "expert" verified this cure and in 1874 wrote
this:

"It is a well known fact, corroborated by science, that whenever an eye is
injured by a flying object in an explosion, the shock engendered is always
sufficient to lead to incurable blindness. Often it happens that the other
eye, unable to escape the repercussion of that shock due to the sympathy
which exists between the two eyes, is itself weakened and ends up blind
too".

The circumstances of this cure were reported by the same Dr. Dozous who
took an interest in them himself.

"As soon as Bernadette had scratched the soil of the Grotto leading to the
appearance of the Spring which had cured so many sick people, I wanted, he
told me, to try and see if this water would cure my eye.

When the chance came to use this water, l started to pray to Our Lady of
the Grotto, and humbly begged her to be with me when I bathed my eye with
the water from the fountain.

I bathed and rebathed my right eye repeatedly in the space of a short time,
and after these ablutions my sight was excellent, just as it is now" (cf.
La Grotte de Lourdes, sa fontaine, ses guerisons).

The Commission of enquiry, set up by Mgr Laurence, heard Dr. Dozous speak
about this cure on 28th. July 1858.

In April 1860, Dr. Henri Vergez, Professor attached to the Faculty at
Montpellier, and Medical Officer at the Waters of Bareges, presented his
preliminary report as requested by Mgr Laurence. He declared as his
opinion:

"This event (the cure) possesses a supernatural character".

The verdict was solemnised in the Mandate of Mgr Laurence in January 1862.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mrs Blaisette CAZENAVE

nee SOUPENE, born in 1808.

Lived in Lourdes. Cured in March 1858, in her 51st. year. Miracle on 18th
January 1862, by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes.

Blaisette CAZENAVE, had serious trouble with her eyes for many years.

This 50 year old Lourdes' woman suffered from a chronic infection of the
conjunctivae and eyelids, with bilateral ectropion... for which medicines
up to then were of little help.

Declared incurable, she decided to use the water from the Grotto as a
lotion. After the second application, she was completely cured. The eyelids
returned to normal, the fleshy overgrowths disappeared, the pain and
inflammation vanished.

Prof. Vergez was able to write about it thus: "The supernatural effect was
as much evident in this wonderful cure as the physical lesion-nowadays we
would say the organic disease of the eyelids--striking as that was, with
the complete return to a normal healthy state by a rapid regrowth of the
tissues".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Henri BUSQUET

Born in 1842

Lived in Nay (Atlantic Pyrenees) Cured towards the end of April 1858, in
his 16th year. Miracle on 18th January 1862, by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of
Tarbes.

This young adolescent had been ill for 15 months.

It all began with a fever, considered at that time as typhoid, but now and
in all likelihood, perceived as the first sign of tuberculosis. This was
followed by an abscess in the neck, really a purulent adenitis, which
spread, in the absence of treatment, to the right side of his chest. After
several months, his doctor lanced the abscess to avoid fistula formation.

But developments were of the most complicated kind. His illness got worse
during a short stay at Cauterets and at the beginning of 1858, an enormous
septic ulcer appeared at the base of his neck. To add to this, more
inflamed lymph glands developed in the adjoining area. There were no signs
of improvement.

At this stage, Henri asked to go to Lourdes, but his parents refused.
Nevertheless they begged a neighbor to bring him some water from the
Grotto.

In the evening of 28.4.1858, while the whole family prayed together, the
young man applied a dressing, soaked in water from the Grotto, to his neck.

After a peaceful night, the ulcer had scarred over, the infection had
subsided, the other lymph glands had disappeared. No relapse occurred in
this sudden and complete cure, something no-one ever anticipated!

This is why Prof. Vergez certified without hesitation: 'This cure is beyond
the laws of nature."

Justin BOUHORT

Born in Lourdes on 28.7.1856, and lived there.

Cured at the beginning of July 1858 at the age of 2 years. Miracle on 18th
January 1862, by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes.

(Orthography and full chronological details established by Frs. Laurentin
and Billet, cf. "Lourdes, Documents Authentiques" Volume V. P. 137-139).

This cure is a delightful story to tell!

Without any doubt whatever, this young boy had been ill frequently since
birth. As a result by the age of 2 years, he showed a great failure to
thrive, had never walked, was considered a hopeless case. In fact, for
quite a long time, he was looked upon as having a "miserable
constitution"... as being a puny and disabled little boy.

At that time he was dying from "consumption" of which his parents were the
first to be aware.

One day, his mother, while watching Justin languish because nothing useful
could be done for him, in desperation made up her mind to take him to the
Grotto in the late afternoon, to implore help from the Blessed Virgin,
despite the notices which prohibited the general public from going there.
On arrival, with the child in her arms and surrounded by a crowd of curious
onlookers, she prayed for a few moments in front of the Rock. Then she
decided to bathe the moribund child in the hollow recently dug by
laborers. Those around shouted, protested and tried to refrain her from
"killing her child!"

After a while, which inevitably seemed terribly long, she lifted the child
out and returned home, carrying her son. When she arrived, Justin was still
breathing feebly, but slept peacefully; while those present feared the
worst, his mother alone was more than ever convinced that the Virgin would
cure him!

In the days which followed, no further sign of a threat to his life. Justin
very quickly recovered, and walked! Back to normal, he grew up and reached
adulthood. Before dying in 1935, he attended the Canonization of Bernadette
in Rome on 8.12.1933.

Concerning this cure, doctors Dozous, Vergez, and also Dr. Peyrus, who had
treated him, could see nothing else than the almighty power of God...

Mrs Madelaine RIZAN

Born in 1800

Lived in Nay (Atlantic Pyrenees) Cured on 17.10.1858, in her 58th year.
Miracle on 18th January 1862, by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes.

Madeleine RIZAN could not get about for more than 20 years, being confined
to bed due to a leftsided paralysis, following an "attack of choera" 26
years before, in 1832.

At the beginning she had difficulty moving around the home. Then she
gradually became bed-ridden, with painful bedsores and the whole range of
trophic disturbances that it was possible to imagine. Her pain was in
marked contrast to her loss of sensibility. Her doctors had long since
abandoned all hope of a cure and had ceased to treat her.

In September,1858, Mrs Rizan received Extreme Unction, and from that day
she prayed for the "grace of a happy death".

A month later, on Saturday 16th. October, death seemed imminent. Next
morning, when her daughter brought her some Lourdes' water, she drank a few
sips, and applied some to her face and body.

Suddenly the illness vanished... her strength returned, her skin regained
its normal appearance and her muscles became active. The woman dying
yesterday evening, now felt she would live again.

Since that day, on which she could once again get up, dress and eat, she
led a normal existence until she died in 1869,11 years later, never having
a relapse.

Unfortunately, we do not possess a picture (photograph or print) of
Madeleine RIZAN, so fortunately cured.

Marie MOREAU

Born in 1841.

Lived in Tartas (Landes). Cured on 9.11.1858, when nearly 17 years old.
Miracle on 18th January 1862, by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes.

The first cure "far away from Lourdes"!

At the beginning of 1858, when Marie was 16 years of age, she contracted an
inflammatory disease of the eyes.

Despite the remedies tried, this condition led to a severe degree of visual
impairment, bordering on blindness.

After her father heard of Mrs Rizan's cure, he decided to go to Lourdes to
get some water from the Grotto.

On the 8th. November,1858, the family started a novena of prayers.

In the evening, the young girl soaked a bandage with Lourdes' water, and
tied it over her eyes.

The next morning, 9th. November, at the moment Marie removed the bandage,
she was aware that her sight was fully restored.

She resumed her studies at Bordeaux, where she had had to abandon them 2
years previously. Afterwards she lived and married at Aire-sur-Adour.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pierre de RUDDER

Born on 2.7.1822 in Jabbeke in Belgium.

Cured on 7.4.1875, in his 53rd. year. Miracle on 25.7.1908, by Mgr Gustave
Waffelaert, Bishop of Bruges.

The story of this well-known cure has been told thousands of times.

We have already seen that it was not the first cure obtained outside
Lourdes, but there was no doubt that it stands as the first cure and
miracle which happened without any use of Lourdes' water.

In 1867, Pierre de RUDDER had his leg crushed when a tree fell down. As a
result he sustained an open fracture of both bones in the upper third of
the left leg.

Despite all treatment given, it was obvious from an early stage that the
fracture would never heal. Due to local infection, and (because of it) the
elimination of newly formed bone over the years, a pseudo artrosis set in
at the site of the fracture, and there was not the slightest chance of the
bones uniting.

The doctors advised amputation several times, but Pierre de RUDDER refused.
After a few years, these doctors abandoned him, because they were
absolutely powerless to help his chronic condition.

In this state, eight years after the accident, Pierre de RUDDER decided to
make a pilgrimage to Oostacker on 7.4.1875, where a replica of the Grotto
of Lourdes had recently been built for the piety of our Belgian neighbours.

Setting off from Jabbeke in the morning as an invalid, unable to stand on
his left leg, he returned in the evening without crutches or wounds.

The bones had united in a matter of minutes, without any shortening or
deviation from the vertical axis. During the following days, the doctors
who had treated him, verified these changes.

Pierre de RUDDER resumed a normal and active life straightaway. To our
knowledge, he went to Lourdes, at least once, and that was in May 1881.

On 22.3.1898, he died, 23 years after his cure.

Later, for further proof, the bones of both legs were exhumed. This allowed
us to see the objective evidence, the site of the fracture in its healed
state, which can now be seen in the moulds in the possession of the Medical
Bureau.

In July 1908, 33 years later (a sort of record!) the Bishop of Bruges
declared that in the cure of Pierre de RUDDER, one could see a miracle
attributable to "an intervention by God, obtained through the intercession
of the Blessed Virgin Mary".

Joachime DEHANT

Born in 1849 in Velaine/s/Sambre

Lived in Gesves (Belgium). Cured 13.9.1878, in her 29th year. Miracle on
25.4.1908, by Mgr Thomas Louis Heylen, Bishop of Namur.

The cure is the oldest one recognised later on as miraculous in Lourdes, of
a "non-native""... a sick-pilgrim from abroad.

Joachime was 29 years old when she arrived there on the evening of
12.9.1878, with an oozing and gangrenous ulcer on her right leg.

This ulcer covered two thirds of the surface of the side of the leg, and
what was even more serious was its depth, which led to a permanent
contraction of the muscles, causing a club foot.

The lesion was at least ten years old, and owing to this affection which no
treatment could cure, her general state of health was very grave.

The next day, the 13th, she took baths during the morning, her leg wrapped
in bandages.

After the second, there was no trace of the ulcer. The flesh and the
tendons had virtually become normal again, and the skin was new and
rose-coloured. And after another bath later on, her foot returned to its
normal position.

For thirty years her health remained excellent and was confirmed by another
medical check. The Bishop of Namur accepted the verdict of the Commission
which he had set up, and on the 25.4.1908, proclaimed that this miraculous
cure must "be attributed to the powerful and efficacious intervention of
Our Lady of Lourdes".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elisa SEISSON

Born in1855

Cured on 29.8.1882, in her 28th year Miracle on 12.7.1912, by Mgr Francois
Bonnefoy, Archbishop of Aix, Arles and Embrun.

Miss Elisa SEISSON of Rognonas fell ill in 1876, when she was 21 years old.

Dr. Pigeon had treated her for 6 years for "chronic bronchitis with severe
organic heart disease". There had been no response to all treatment and her
case was considered incurable, in fact hopeless.

Elisa SEISSON came to Lourdes at the end of August 1882, and went into the
Baths on the first day of her pilgrimage. She came out very much improved,
having lost all the oedema of both legs.

After a good night's rest, she woke up feeling she was completely cured.

Her doctor confirmed this impression on 18.9.1882. Elisa remained well for
the next 30 years, and this enabled her Bishop in 1912 to declare
officially that the cure was miraculous.

The Medical Bureau of Verifications (M.B.V.) has evidence of her visit the
day after her cure, on 30.8.1882, in a report written and signed by Fr.
Burosse, m.i.c.

Later, on 18th September 1896, she was examined by doctors within the
Medical Bureau of Verifications, founded in 1883..

Sister EUGENIA

Marie MABILLE, Born in1855

Cured 21.8.1883, in her 29th. year. Miracle on 30.8.1908, by Mgr Philippe
Meunier, Bishop of Evreux.

This is an outstanding cure because the clinical account of the former
illness was perfectly established, due to its long duration and the number
and competence of the doctors who looked after her.

In 1877, when 22 years of age, she developed an abscess, almost certainly
from the appendix, which in those days could not be cured.

Two years later, evidence of peritonitis and bilateral phlebitis appeared.

In 1880, she was seen by the famous Prof. Pean in Paris. His opinion was
that surgery was quite inappropriate in this case of "longstanding chronic
infection in the right iliac fossa, with vesical and colonic fistulae".

Between 1880 and 1883, all therapeutic measures were ineffective, and her
general state of ill-health only made things worse.

Although at death's door, Sister EUGENIA departed for Lourdes in August
1883.

Having left on the 17th. she reached there on the 21st., and on arrival was
taken to the Grotto where she received Holy Communion and sensed some
relief.

But it was in the afternoon at the Baths that Sister felt cured. She came
out on her own and from that moment all signs of her illness vanished. She
could walk at the first attempt and took food. On returning to her
Community, she resumed work... and followed the Rule, something she had not
been able to do for 5 years.

The doctors who had the opportunity to examine her (in particular Dr. Dunot
de St Maclou who had founded the M.B.V. that year and followed her case
after the cure) have written an extremely competent account, leaving
nothing vague or equivocal, which proved the case and could have been
written today, a century later.

There was no change in her florishing state of health throughout the next
24 years, the interval between the time of the cure and its recognition as
miraculous by her Bishop, the Bishop of Evreux.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sister JULIENNE

Aline BRUYERE, Born in1864

In the village of la Roque, near Sarlat. Cured on 1.9.1889, in her 25th.
year. Miracle on 7.3.1912, by Mgr Albert Negre, Bishop of Tulle.

This case, of cavitating pulmonary tuberculosis, is recognised as
miraculous, with a wealth of detail, difficult to visualise in those far
off days.

The doctors, for their part, established that Sister JULIENNE: --had
suffered from a grave and incurable pulmonary disease; --was cured in a
completely sudden way in the Baths at Lourdes; --had remained perfectly
well for more than a year.

These were the findings of a rigourous investigation undertaken by both Dr.
Dunot de St. Maclou, and his colleague, Dr. Boissarie in 1 889-1 890.

When the Canonical enquiry took place in 1911-1912 (i.e. more than 20 years
later), the same medical report was submitted for verification to another
group of doctors who, in their turn, questioned and examined the nun. They
were also shown an X-ray which demonstrated the original pulmonary lesion.

With these two medical investigations, 20 years apart, both giving
consistent clinical and radiological reports, and the fact that this cure,
when submitted to the list of criteria drawn up by Benedict XIV, did not
fail to be judged as certain and complete, instantaneous, lasting and
occurring without the aid of any treatment, Mgr Albert Negre had no
difficulty in declaring the cure on 7.3.1912, as "happening outside the
sphere of nature, and miraculous,..

Sister JOSEPHINE MARIE

nee Anne JOURDAIN, born on 5.8.1854, in Le Havre

Cured on 21.8.1890, in her 36th year. Miracle on 10.10.1908, by Mgr Marie
Jean Douais, Bishop of Beauvais.

Here is another cure of "tuberculosis with gross apical lesions" which
occurred in a young woman, born into a family where this disease had caused
the deaths of two sisters and one brother.

Ill for a long time, she was moribund by July 1890. Under obedience, she
agreed to go on pilgrimage to Lourdes, against the advice of her doctor.

The journey with the National Pilgrimage was plagued with haemoptyses. Sr
JOSEPHINE MARIE arrived on the 20th August, and straightaway was plunged
into the Baths.

It was the next day, 21st August, after a second or possibly a third
immersion that she felt infinitely better and could announce her cure.

The doctor who had opposed her departure for Lourdes, saw her again on the
28th, after she had returned to her Community, and issued a certificate
stating that the disease had completely disappeared.

Since then Sr JOSEPHINE MARIE resumed an active life in her Convent and had
no further need for the doctor.

The Canonical judgement recognising the miraculous character of this cure,
was given by the Bishop of Beauvais. It was supported by the medical
investigation at the M.B.V. in 1890, and confirmed by an X-ray 28 years
afterwards.

It established that this cure "complete, lasting, instantaneous and
obtained without any form of human help" must be considered as a miracle.

Amelie CHAGNON

Born on 17.9.1874

Lived in the Diocese of Tournai (Belgium). Cured on 21.8.1891, when nearly
17 years old. Miracle on 8.9.1910, by Mgr Charles G. Walravens, Bishop of
Tournai.

This was the first of a long series of "bone diseases", amongst the cures
recognised as miraculous in Lourdes.

Amelie CHAGNON was about 13 years old when tuberculous arthritis started in
her left knee. Shortly afterwards this was followed by a similar lesion
(called in those days: caries...) in the left foot.

For a whole year the treatment given by two doctors proved ineffective.
When Amelie told one of them of her intention of going to Lourdes, he
agreed to postpone a surgical operation until the end of August.

On the 30th. August and the 5th. September 1891, these same doctors
certified that the disease had been cured without any sequelae, enabling
all movements to be carried out freely and painlessly.

Similar investigations were undertaken in December 1893, and in May 1910.

On the grounds of these medical assessments, the Bishop of Tournai
recognised the miraculous character of this cure on 8.9.1910.

Clementine TROUVE

Born inAzay le Boule, in 1878

Cured on 21.8.1891, in her 14th year. Miracle on 6.6.1908, by Mgr Amette,
Archbishop of Paris.

On the very same day as the previous one (A. Chagnon), another cure
occurred in a young girl... slightly younger than she.

The disease was practically the same: tuberculous osteoperiostitis of the
right calcaneum.

The doctor who wrote the certificate on her departure for Lourdes on
11.6.1891 held the opinion that her illness warranted a radical
operation... or else, some other lengthy treatment.

The same doctor who saw Clementine again after her cure in the Piscines on
the 21st August, and the Medical Bureau of Verifications, having examined
her on the same day, both certified: "that she only bore the scarred mark"
of her former illness which "was now cured".

This is the girl who appeared in the book about Lourdes of the famous
French writer E. Zola, under the name of Sophie Couteau.

In actual fact, she became a Little Sister of the Assumption taking the
name of Sister Agnes Marie.

Mgr Amette, Archbishop of Paris, in 1908 recognised five cures as
miraculous in a collective declaration. All of them happened in the last
decade of the 19th century. Clementine Trouve was the youngest of this
group.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marie LEBRANCHU

Born in1857. Cured in her 36th. year.

Marie LEMARCHAND

Born in1874, in Caen. Cured in her 19th. year.

These two cases were closely connected!

... Both of them were sick pilgrims in the Paris section of the National
Pilgrimage.

... Both were cured on successive days, 20th., and 21st. August 1892.

Also, as in the preceding case, they were among the cures declared
miraculous by Mgr Amette, Archbishop of Paris, in his Canonical judgement
of 6.6.1908.

Both suffered from severe pulmonary tuberculosis (Koch's bacillus + ) for
two years, and had reached the terminal stages of this disease.

Marie LEBRANCHU weighed less than 60 lbs., when she came out of the
Baths... cured.

Marie LEMARCHAND had deep tuberculous ulcerated areas on her face, quite
resistant to all treatment, and very repulsive.

Lastly, both had the chance to meet M. Emile Zola at the Medical Bureau of
Verifications where he had been allowed in, perhaps invited!

In one of his books, our "novelist", altered the real facts. Having
depicted as an ill person the rather unenviable lot of Marie LEBRANCHU,
using the name of La Grivotte, he made her die on the train home! Yet, she
lived in perfect health until 1920!

As for the other, Marie LEMARCHAND-- "Elisa Rouquet", for E. Zola...--she
got married and had 8 children. She never had a relapse and died long after
her cure was declared miraculous.

Elisa LESAGE

Born inBucquoy (Pas de Calais) in 1874

Cured on 21.8.1892, in her 19th. year. Miracle on 4.2.1908, by Mgr Alfred
Williez, Bishop of Arras.

Here again is a case of tuberculosis of the right knee, awfully common
among adolescents in those days. She had had this "white swelling" for more
than a year.

The doctor who treated this young girl before she went to Lourdes, was
fully aware of the well-known course of this disease, namely ankylosis of
the joint in the long-run, assuming no further spread of the disease
ensued.

The unexpected cure happened after a bath on 21.8.1892, and her complete
recovery was confirmed on the same day by the Medical Bureau of
Verifications "without any sequelae or ankylosis"

While accompanying the same National Pilgrimage in 1893 and 1894, Elisa was
examined again.

Sixteen years later, no recurrence had taken place. Her Bishop declared the
cure as miraculous.

Sister MARIE OF THE PRESENTATION

Born in15.2. 1846

Cured on 29.8.1892, in her 47th year. Miracle on 15.8.1908, by Mgr Francois
Delamaire, Coadjutor of Cambrai.

A Franciscan nun, Sr MARIE OF THE PRESENTATION, from the order of the
Propagation of the Faith, lived in Lille. She developed what the doctors
called "chronic gastro-enteritis". For twelve years this disease steadily
became worse, to such an extent that those who cared for her could not
prevent "a state of absolute starvation, which would undoubtedly end in
death". (Prof. Lavrand).

Sr MARIE wanted to go to Lourdes. Her doctor, and the others looking after
her, thought it useless to try to dissuade her.

The journey from the North of France in those years lasted more than two
days. However the first sign of improvement was seen in the train. This
enabled her to eat a little.

While she was praying in the Rosary Basilica, she experienced for the last
time "stomach pains far worse than she had ever felt before" and then, the
unexpected, sudden and total cure happened.

I n 1908, for the 50th . Anniversary of the Apparitions, Mgr Delamaire,
Bishop-Coadjutor of her Diocese, declared this cure as miraculous, since
for 16 years there had not been any relapse.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Father CIRETTE

Born inPoses (Eure), on 15.3.1847

Cured on 31.8.1893, in his 47th year. Miracle on 11.2.1907, by Mgr Philippe
Meunier, Bishop of Evreux.

In January 1892, this priest in charge of a Parish in the Diocese Evreux,
showed signs of a nervous disorder after influenza: -- Complete loss of
ability to do anything without aid, and inability to walk, -- Mental
confusion, -- Difficulty with speech and memory, i.e. symptoms originating
from the spinal cord and brain.

His morale was very low in the early part of 1893 due to ineffective
treatment.

As there was no improvement in his health by August, he decided to go to
Lourdes with the Diocese of Rouen. His own diocese was not going to Lourdes
that year.

Father arrived on the 29th August, but he did not go to the Baths until the
31st (not wanting "to take up a place of another sick pilgrim who might
obtain a cure" there). At first, nothing particular happened. But later,
after the mid-day meal, he felt an overwhelming desire to go to the Grotto.
He set off there, and quickly realised that he had no further use for his
walking sticks. He was cured... in a complete, sudden and unexpected way.

Moreover the cure was lasting.

Father CIRETTE was able to take up all his activities again, working as a
priest in the Parish of Beaumontel. 14 years after, this cure was
attributed by his Bishop, Mgr Meunier to "the intervention of a
supernatural cause, which could be none other than the Almighty Power of
God".

Aurelie HUPRELLE

Born in1869

Cured on 21.8.1895, in her 27th. year. Miracle on 1.5.1908, by Mgr Marie
Jean Douais, Bishop of Beauvais.

This young lady of 26 years, clearly suffering from cavitating pulmonary
tuberculosis, could not expect anything from medicine in those days.
Therefore, she decided to set off for Lourdes with the National Pilgrimage,
against medical advice.

After an extremely arduous journey, she arrived in Lourdes on 21.8.1895,
quite exhausted. When she got off the train, she was carried to the Baths
to bathe. There she felt so much better, and considered herself as
radically cured.

During the day she regained her zest for life, and was taken to the Medical
Bureau of Verifications twice, where this cure was confirmed after a
thorough medical examination.

When she returned home, her physician, utterly astounded by the state of
his former sick patient, verified "the reality of this complete and sudden
cure".

13 years afterwards, for the 50th. Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our
Lady of Lourdes, the Bishop of Beauvais asked for another inquiry into her
case. At his request, therefore, she was again seen, questioned and
examined. On this occasion she was found to be in excellent condition,
although thin. In this case too, one could see on the X-ray film, clear
evidence of her old tuberculous foci in the lungs.

Mgr Douais had no difficulty in recognising on 1.5.1908, that the cure of
Aurelie HUPRELLE possessed "the character of a true and certain miracle".

Note that this cure was the subject of a further medical inquiry undertaken
by other more highly qualified doctors. This was done because of a campaign
of detraction, undertaken by a lobby (and above all, a German physician,
Dr. Aigner) who claimed the illness of Aurelie HUPRELLE was purely nervous.

The results produced from this enquiry in 1909, corroborated entirely the
results of earlier ones, namely that it was certainly a case of
tuberculosis, cured in a sudden, definitive and lasting manner.

Esther BRACHMAN

Born inParis, in 1881

Cured at Lourdes on the 21.8.1896, in her 16th year. Miracle on 6.6.1908,
by Mgr Leon Amette, Archbishop of Paris.

Esther, a 15-yr. old adolescent, had also had tuberculosis for two years
when she joined the National Pilgrimage in 1896, with a group of 12-15
friends who were at the Hospice of Villepinte, a home for people dying of
T.B., of all ages.

On the morning of the 21st August, after she left the train, she was taken
straight to the Grotto and from there to the Baths.

When she came out, she too was sure she had been cured there. Her pain had
ceased, the swelling of her abdomen had subsided. She could walk and was
hungry. In the afternoon, she followed the spiritual exercises of the
pilgrimage. The next morning, she made the Stations of the Cross up the
Calvary.

Two days later, she went to the M.B.V. where the doctors confirmed her cure
after thoroughly examining her.

On returning to Villepinte, the embarrassed doctors kept this girl under
observation for a year. Only when she returned from a Pilgrimage of
Thanksgiving did they issue a certificate confirming her cure on the visit
to Lourdes in 1896.

In 1908, she was examined again and found to be in perfect health. This was
at the time of the investigation requested by Mgr Leon Amette, Archbishop
of Paris. He then recognised the cure of Esther Brachmann, like those of
Clementine Trouve, Marie Lebranchu and Lemarchand... all of them unwilling
heroines of E. Zola's "novel"

Jeanne TULASNE

Born on 8.9.1877, in Indre et Loire.

Cured on the 8.9.1897, at 20 years of age. Miracle on 27.10.1907, by Mgr
Rene Francois Renou, Archbishop of Tours.

This young lady in late adolescence was already suffering from tuberculous
peritonitis by the time she was 18 years old. Six months later the disease
had spread to her vertebral column. Within a few more months the lesions
were serious, having caused:

--destruction of 2 or 3 vertebrae, with marked curvature of the dorsolumbar
spine; --a bone abscess in the left thigh; --muscular atrophy and clubfoot.

All these were certified by her doctor on 7.8.1897.

At the beginning of September, Jeanne, in a very poor state, came to
Lourdes with her Diocesan Pilgrimage.

On the 8th. of September, her twentieth birthday, she too joined in the
Blessed Sacrament Procession. Her own Bishop, Archbishop of Tours, carried
the monstrance.

And then, all at once, she felt cured.

She was examined at the Medical Bureau of Verifications the next day, and
again the next year, 1898, where doctors had no option but to confirm the
cure from the prolonged illness of Pott's Disease, as complete, sudden and
lasting.

Nine years afterwards, Mgr Rene Francois Renou, Archbishop of Tours, upon
request, appointed a Canonical Commission in 1906, which found the cure
miraculous.

The Archbishop himself, proclaimed on 27.10.1907, that "the cure of Jeanne
TULASNE was a miraculous cure, and had happened 10 years earlier when the
Blessed Sacrament was carried past her"

Clementine MALOT

Born inGranvilliers on 22.11.1872

Cured on 21.8.1898, in her 26th year. Miracle on 1 .1 1 .1908, by Mgr Marie
Jean Douais, Bishop of Beauvais.

Here is another young lady of 20 years who, in 1892, presented a case of
tuberculosis with spitting of blood.

She too, in desperation, decided to go to Lourdes in 1898 with the National
Pilgrimage.

After a very trying journey to Lourdes, she was taken to the Baths on
arrival. But it was only with the next day and bath that she felt a very
marked improvement in her health.

Clementine was examined at the Medical Bureau of Verifications on 21st. and
23rd. of August 1898, and again the following year on 21st. August .

There the cure was confirmed and upheld as certain.

As we have seen already in the case of Miss Huprelle at the time of the
50th. Anniversary of the Apparitions in Lourdes, her Bishop, Mgr Douais,
subjected this ex-patient and the dossier of her cure to a new inquiry by a
consultant physician, and an X-ray check.

This investigation, together with the evidence provided by the vestiges of
the original lesions, corroborated the diagnosis put forward 10 years
before at the time of her cure in 1898.

With all this confirmation, the Bishop of Beauvais thought it proper to
declare (six months after A. Huprelle) the cure of Clementine MALOT as
miraculous on 1.11.1908.

Mrs Rose FRANCOIS

nee LABREUVOIES, Born in1863

Cured on 20.8.1899, in her 36th year. Miracle on 6.6.1908, by Mgr Jean
Amette, Archbishop of Paris.

The last of the five cures declared miraculous by the Archbishop of Paris
at the beginning of this century.

Mrs FRANCOIS arrived in Lourdes in 1899 carrying a medical certificate
dated 16th August, which stated that for nearly a year she had suffered
from the effects of a "chronic infection of the right arm, with numerous
fistulae and gross lymphoedema of the upper arm and forearm"

The five operations she underwent between December 1898 and July 1899, each
intended to relieve the infection of the distal part of the arm. were in
vain.

As a last resort, she was told that amputation would be essential.

Between the 20th and 21st August,1899, a complete transformation occurred.
The oedema disappeared, the fistulae closed, and there was no more pain or
stiffness. On returning to Paris, she was examined again: she was already
using her right hand perfectly normally.

This complete and unexpected cure was still obvious when she was examined
again in 1908, just prior to the Canonical judgement announced on June 6th
by Mgr Amette.

Reverend Father SALVATOR, capuchin

Born in1862.

Lived in Dinard. Cured on 25.6.1900, in his 39th. year. Miracle on
1.7.1908, by Mgr A. Dubourg, Archbishop of Rennes.

This case was diagnosed as one of pulmonary tuberculosis at the beginning
of 1898.

In 1900, two years later, tuberculous peritonitis set in. This was
confirmed by his doctors on the day before his departure for Lourdes. These
doctors refused to treat him, said he was doomed, and even opposed his
pilgrimage.

On arrival at Lourdes on the 25th. June, he too was taken immediately to
the Baths. A few minutes later, he emerged from them transformed; so
rejuvenated was he that neither he nor those with him were in doubt about
his cure.

That same evening Fr. SALVATOR took some food, in fact ate with a hearty
appetite, and could sleep well again.

The next morning, 26th. June, out of obedience, he went to the Medical
Bureau of Verifications, where no sign at all could be found of his former
and formidable illness.

Finally, 8 years later in 1908, the Friar was examined again by two doctors
attached to the Canonical Commission appointed by the Archbishop of Rennes.
His physical condition was considered most satisfactory.

And on 1.7.1908, Mgr Dubourg was delighted to declare that "this cure of a
grave organic disease was instantaneous, radical and definitive, presenting
all the features of a miraculous case and could only be due to a
supernatural intervention".

Sister MAXIMILIEN

Born in1858

Lived in Marseille (Convent of the Sisters of Hope). Cured on 20.5.1901, in
her 44th year. Miracle on 5.2.1908, by Cardinal Paulin Andrieu, Bishop of
Marseille.

A 43 year old nun, ill for 15 years and totally bedfast for 5, due to a
hydatid cyst of the liver with phlebitis of the left leg, decided to come
to Lourdes, knowing she was incurable.

She arrived there on 20.5.1901, and she too was taken forthwith to the
Baths.

A few minutes later, she came out, walking... and cured! The swellings of
her abdomen and leg had vanished!

The next day, 21st May, Sister visited the M.B.V. where she recounted her
long history. After the doctors had heard her story and examined her, they
decided to request her own doctor to telegramme a medical certificate. This
came a few hours later.

In it, Dr Rampal quoted the diagnosis and the incurable nature of her
illness.

Eight days later, he thought it upright to write another report in which he
stated:

"I am bound to say in all sincerity, that Sister MAXIMILIEN returned from
Lourdes completely cured" on the 29.5.1901.

This cure, from an illness reputed to be incurable, was sudden, definitive,
and completely unexpected. The Bishop of Marseille declared it as
miraculous, and attributable to the all-powerful and effective intervention
of Our Lady of Lourdes on 5.2.1908.

Marie SAVOYE

Born in1877.

Lived in Cateau-Cambresis (Nord). Cured on 20.9.1901, in her 24th. year.
Miracle on 15.8.1908, by Mgr Francois Delamaire, Coadjutor of Cambrai.

This was a cure of a non-tuberculous illness, and therefore relatively
uncommon. The Medical Bureau of Verifications possesses a very detailed and
comprehensive document on it, which cannot be reported here, however great
its interest may be.

It seems more appropriate to our purpose to describe the final summary of
the Canonical Judgement of Mgr Delamaire, Bishop Coadjutor of her Diocese.

Considering:

1) that for four years she suffered from the consequences of rheumatic
fever; that for 13 months she suffered especially from heart disease, with
all the signs of a mitral lesion; that the illness, with an almost complete
loss of appetite and spitting of blood, led to such weakness that no one
dared to plunge her into the Baths;

2) that at Lourdes, during the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, all
these symptoms suddenly disappeared, as well as the bed-sore on her back,
due to the long time she had lain in bed; that all this happened without
any natural cause as an explanation;

3) that her sudden cure was so complete that the "miraculee" could give to
others for the next seven years the sort of help she herself had received
during her long illness, without a relapse;

for all these reasons, we, Francois Delamaire, Archbishop of Metymne,
Coadjutor of Cambrai, judge and declare the cure of Marie SAVOYE as
miraculous.

Given at Cambrai on 15.8.1908.

Mrs Johanna BEZENAC

nee DUBOS,

Born in1876

Cured on 8.8.1904. Miracle on 2.7.1908, by Mgr Henri J. Bougoin, Bishop of
Perigueux.

Following a long spell of breast-feeding, Mrs BEZENAC contracted in March
1901 severe pneumonia, which was the prelude to a state of progressive
cachexia, apparently tuberculous in nature, and singularly unaffected by
any treatment.

From then onwards, her condition steadily deteriorated. The infection
attacked the skin of her face, gradually spreading upwards into the hair
roots.

She came to Lourdes with her Diocesan Pilgrimage. It seems that she was
cured in several stages between the 8th and 9th of August 1904 and that the
cure was associated with water from the Spring, in the Baths or used as a
lotion.

The M.B.V. only dealt with this cure in a very brief account. In contrast,
on 4.10.1904, two months after her pilgrimage, the doctor who had treated
her verified the "absolute cure of her general condition and localised
lesions".

On this evidence, her Bishop declared that this cure had "the character of
a true-miracle" in July, 1908.

Sister SAINT HILAIRE

Born in 1865

Superior of the Convent of Peyreleau (Cong. of St Joseph of Clairvaux)

Cured on 20.8.1904, in her 40th, year.

Miracle on 10.5.1908,

by Mgr Charles de Ligonnes, Bishop of Rodez.

Sister St HILAIRE aged 38 years, presented a case of chronic
gastroenteritis in the month of August, 1903. It was resistent to all
treatment.

In February 1904, six months after the onset, a swelling appeared on her
right-side, and she had become grossly emaciated and asthenic.

During the next few months, her poor state of health was aggravated by
further loss of weight (down to 42 kg.), and by ever-more frequent loss of
blood in the stools. The doctors had no remedy.

In this lamentable state, Sister went to Lourdes with the National
Pilgrimage in August.

After the first Bath, she felt reinvigorated, recovered her appetite and
realised after a few hours that she was cured.

On 22.8.1904, she attended the Medical Bureau of Verifications for an
examination.

On returning to her Community she took up "a life of hard work" Three
months after the cure she weighed 62 kg.

The nun presented herself again at the Medical Bureau of Verifications in
the course of her pilgrimages of thanksgiving with the Diocese of Rodez in
August 1905, July 1906 and 1907.

In 1908, Mgr Charles de Ligonnes, Bishop of Rodez, declared that this
sudden cure from an incurable illness, after her first immersion in the
Baths, must be recognised as miraculous, because "it happened without any
medical treatment"

Sister SAINT BEATRIX

nee Rosalie VILDIER

Born in1862

Lived in Evreux. Cured on 31.8.1904, in her 43rd. year. Miracle on
25.3.1908, by Mgr Philippe Meunier, Bishop of Evreux.

Starting in 1894, the health of Sister St. BEATRIX, aged 32 years, was
drastically altered by laryngeal-bronchitis, associated with gross
emaciation .

From 1896 until her Pilgrimage to Lourdes at the end of August 1904, the
signs became more obvious and grave. Her general weakness, loss of weight,
cough with blood and pus in the sputum, and cachexia, were all clearly due
to tuberculosis, according to the doctors who were looking after her.

On the morning her Diocesan Pilgrimage arrived in Lourdes, she felt quite a
change come over her after visiting the Baths.

Examined two days afterwards at the M.B.V., nothing at all abnormal was
found, either in her larynx or chest.

The next year,1905, Sister returned to Lourdes to thank Our Lady. . . and
furthermore, again in the Baths, she obtained another cure, this time of
the visual disturbances which had afflicted her for 15 years!

For all these reasons, and considering that this "sudden, complete and
radical cure, could not be explained by any natural cause" the bishop of
Evreux, on the 25.3.1908, judged that this cure had the mark of a true
miracle.

Marie-Therese NOBLET

Born in1889

Lived near to Rheims. Cured on 31.8.1905, in her 16th year. Miracle on 1 1
.2.1908, by Cardinal Lucon, Archbishop of Rheims.

This young girl, cured at the beginning of this century, had a truly
remarkable destiny. Judge for yourself!

Her childhood was frequently upset by several serious illnesses.

In August 1904, when just fourteen years old, she was diagnosed as having
Pott's Disease (tuberculosis of the spine), apparently "of peculiar
appearance, owing to some concomitant nervous phenomena".

A year later when she came to Lourdes, M. T. NOBLET was cured at the moment
she entered the Hospital of Notre-Dame des Douleurs, on returning from the
Blessed Sacrament Procession.

She was examined at the M.B.V. the next morning, and was followed up for a
year by her family doctor. Never again was there the slightest suggestion
of pain, deformity or restricted movements.

After being examined three years later by the Commission appointed by the
Cardinal Archbishop of Rheims, Mgr L. J. Lucon recognised this cure as
miraculous.

After that, she went through a mystical experience, comparable to that of
the Cure of Ars; and after much physical torment, finished up in 1921
entering a religious Order under the aegis of Mgr. de Boismenu, Archbishop
of Papua-New Guinea, founder of the first order of aboriginal nuns, the
"Ancelles du Seigneur", (the Handmaids of Lord).

The cure of Marie-Therese NOBLET was the last of the 22 cures recognised as
miraculous in 1907-1908 by the Ordinaries of 13 Bishoprics (11 French and 2
Belgian), instigated by Mgr. Schoepfer, Bishop of Tarbes, and Dr. G.
Boissarie, for the "Celebration of the 50th. Anniversary of the
Apparitions".

Cecile DOUBILLE de FRANSSU

Born on 26.12.1885 in Tournai (Belgium)

Cured on 21.9.1905, in her 20th. year. Miracle on 8.12.1909, by Mgr Charles
Gibier, Bishop of Versailles.

Here again, an extraordinary destiny was in store for this person. Cured
when she was just under twenty years old, she was feted by all her
relations on the day of her 100th. anniversary, the 26.12.1985!

However her childhood was anything but tranquil. At fourteen, she developed
a "white swelling" or "cold abscess", of the knee... caused by
tuberculosis. After four or five years of careful treatment, without any
apparent success, it was decided to suggest to her an operation in June
1904.

About the same time, another area of infection appeared--tuberculous
peritonitis, which went from bad to worse in the next months.

She had constant pain unrelieved by the application of ice, hardly any
appetite, and fever... all signs of progressive consumption.

This young lady expressed a wish to go to Lourdes in May 1905.

With no improvement in sight, and despite the precariousness of her general
health, the journey was undertaken in September, but not without many
alarms.

In Lourdes on 21.9.1905, with infinite precaution, she was taken to the
Baths, from where she emerged cured... for a long time.

On the same evening she was examined at the M.B.V., where no sign of
disease, past or present, was found.

For four years her health, so unexpectedly recovered, remained excellent.
Her Bishop, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, 8.12.1909,
recognised this cure as miraculous.

It was eighty years before her centenary!

Antonia MOULIN

Born on 13.4.1877 in Vienne (Isere)

Cured on 10.8.1907, in her 31st. year. Miracle on 6.1 1.191 1, by Mgr Paul
E. Henry, Bishop of Grenoble.

The story of this young woman is an example in more ways than one!

At the end of an illness, which in those days was sufficiently serious to
need treatment in hospital, she developed, in February 1905, an abscess of
the right leg with phlebitis and lymphangitis, and stayed in hospital for
more than 6 months. In September 1905 she went to Lourdes with the
Pilgrimage of Grenoble. Five days later she left, without any improvement
at all!

Back in hospital in Vienne, her condition deteriorated. More abscesses
appeared, causing fistulae intermittently. This continued for 5 months, up
to March 1906.

Then she spent 10 months in the "Hotel-Dieu" in Lyons, where in spite of a
variety of treatments, there was no improvement.

At the end of 1906, fearing death, she wanted to be brought nearer to her
relatives. Despite every care, her general state remained in jeopardy. The
local wound on the right thigh increased in size and depth, and never
stopped discharging pus. Her knee became grossly enlarged and ankylosed.

In August, Antonia set off again for Lourdes, two years after her first
visit. On the journey, the offensive odour of the pus was most unpleasant
for the others in her coach. She arrived as an incurable patient.

On the second day after her arrival, August 10th., she was carried to the
Baths again. When her wound was redressed, it was noticed that it had
scarred over, and that she could use her limb once more!

She was taken immediately to the Grotto so that she could walk round it,
and from there to the M.B.V., where her cure was confirmed after
examination.

Everyone was amazed when she got back home, especially her doctor who, on
25th. September, signed a certificate stating:

"This cure is scientifically inexplicable".

Returning to Lourdes in 1908, '09, and '10 as a helper, she never failed to
call at the M.B.V. and meet Dr. Boissarie.

On 6.11.1910, her Bishop, after taking advice from his Canonical
Commission, and ensuring that all the requisites of the Church had been
fulfilled, declared that the cure of Miss Antonia MOULIN was miraculous.

Marie BOREL

Born on 14.11.1879 in Lozere

Cured on 21-22nd. August, 1907, in her 28th. year. Miracle on 4.6.1911, by
Mgr Jacques Gely, Bishop of Mende.

From the age of 22 years, Marie BOREL suffered many attacks of acute
appendicitis. Eventually, after two years of ineffective treatment, she was
operated upon in 1903.

A few months later, in 1904, an abscess formed beneath the incision. It was
lanced, but it quickly led to the formation of a fistula. Although attempts
were made to close it, they were in vain.

From 1905, other abscesses appeared; and what was much more serious, they
invaded the colon, and discharged on to the anterior and posterior
abdominal walls, to such an extent that after several months, the normal
path of the stools was entirely re-routed!

It is hardly necessary to say that this situation could only get worse, and
that in those days there was no effective treatment for such lesions.

Marie BOREL arrived in Lourdes on 17.8.1907 with the National Pilgrimage,
and took part in the ceremonies as far as her pitiful condition permitted.

On the morning of 21.8.1907, the dressings over the discharging fistulae
were changed as usual. In the evening, the four on the anterior wall had
closed, and the dressings were clean and dry. The next day, the two on the
posterior wall had closed when she came out of the Baths.

At the M.B.V. the doctors verified that the fistulae had closed, and the
stools now followed their normal course. This sudden, perfect and
definitive cure, checked each year by different doctors between 1907-11,
has always been considered by all the experts as scientifically
inexplicable.

The Bishop of Mende, Mgr J. Gely, took note of all the medical evidence,
and on 4.6.11, judged the case miraculous, and attributed it to a special
intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Virginie HAUDEBOURG

Born in1886 in Lons-le-Saunier (France)

Cured on 17.5.1908, in her 23rd. year. Miracle on 25.1 1 .1912, by Mgr
Francois A. Mallet, Bishop of Saint-Claude.

Virginie was an orphan who never had a serious illness up to the age of
eighteen years. Then in July 1904, her illness began with cystitis and
nephritis, a urinary infection diagnosed in the laboratory as tuberculous
in origin.

In those days it was an incurable and fatal disease, often with a long
drawn-out course.

In May 1906, she made her first Pilgrimage to Lourdes... but there was no
change in her condition.

The rest of that year, and the following one, passed by without the least
improvement. However the early months of 1908 were marked by an obvious
deterioration. Her pain became worse; nothing relieved it. Virginie could
no longer get up.

She decided to join her Diocesan Pilgrimage again in 1908. On the third day
during the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament, she felt another violent
pain, the prelude to her cure. After spending a peaceful night she went to
the M.B.V. next morning where urine tests were normal, and her cure was
confirmed.

Fifty years onwards from that day, no relapse ever having occurred, she
presented herself once more at the Medical Bureau on 24.4.1958!

On the advice of a Canonical Commission, Mgr Mallet concluded on
25.11.1912, that this cure, which happened "outside the general order of
nature" must be considered as miraculous.
