The ten commandments (or
decalogue) given
to Moses by God for his people. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.[3] It is written: "You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve."[4] Am I keeping this commandment?
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.[72] You have heard that it was said to the men of old, "You shall not swear falsely. . But I say to you, Do not swear at all.[73] Am I keeping this commandment?
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work.[90] The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.[91] Am I keeping this commandment?
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.[4] Am I keeping this commandment?
THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT You shall not kill.[54] You have heard that it was said to the men of old, "You shall not kill: and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment." But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment.[55] 2258 "Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being."[56] Am I keeping this commandment?
