Matthew 9:36-10:8
Year A -
11th Sunday in ordinary time
He summoned his twelve disciples and sent them out
Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
When I saw the crowds I felt compassion for them, indeed they were like sheep without a shepherd. I came to be the Good Shepherd, the one who heals, guides and protects the flock. For this reason I delegated my authority to my disciples and apostles, so that they could in turn become shepherds of my people. I gave them powers never seen before in men, in order to make their testimony to my words more effective. I continue my work through my Church, although I still feel sad and compassionate for my children who go astray and refuse to listen to me through those that I have commissioned. The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few. Great rewards I have prepared for those who follow me, and greater still for those who work tirelessly for the spreading of my Kingdom. My people perish for lack of knowledge of God. Wisdom is not welcome anymore because the world has so much to offer. Men have become very ambitious for the perishable things that don’t last. What is good they call bad, what is bad they call good. Ah, if only they paid attention to my words, if they renounced themselves and accepted my cross, they could follow me into the everlasting life that I provide. I am not asking anyone to stop working, since work is for a good cause. I am not asking anyone to give up all his material possessions to follow me. What I ask is to renounce greed, to share with the poor, to be just, to be merciful and to love God above everything else. I said give to Cesar what belong to Cesar’s, but give to God what belongs to God. To God all the kingdom, the power, the honor and the glory, to Him all reverence and praise. What I see is the exaltation of material things at the cost of the life of the spirit. Remember everyone, you are temples of the Spirit of God, you are not just flesh and bones, you are children of the Most High. You are called to accept the call of the Heavenly Father who wants his children close to Him. Those who reject the call of God are destined to perdition. Their sins will have no forgiveness because the have rejected the Holy Spirit. I am calling everyone, time and time again, I never tire of knocking at the door of their hearts begging for a moment of reflection. It is never too late to repent and change because I am patient until the end; but I advise everyone to be always ready for my coming, since I don’t have to give any warning when I come. I have all the time in the world, but you don’t.
