Luke 23:35-43
Year C -
Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King
Amen I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.
35 And the people stood beholding, and the rulers with them derided him, saying: He saved others; let him save himself, if he is Christ, the elect of God.
The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. But how many people fear God now? And how many showed respect and feared God, when I, the Word Incarnate came into the world to offer salvation? Not many, I tell you. Pride was in Heaven when Lucifer defied the Divine Will and by his insult merited his condemnation together with all his followers. Pride entered the human race in Paradise when Adam and Eve disregarded the commandment of God and submitted to the temptations of the evil one. Pride has plagued the human race throughout the centuries and has defied all the messengers of God. Pride was responsible for the death of all the Prophets and finally motivated my enemies to kill me. Pride will continue defying God until the end of times. I came to the world to offer my Kingdom to everyone who accepts humbly my invitation to repent and to follow me. I am the King of Kings, the Almighty, the all loving, the all merciful. I did not come to force my Kingdom upon anyone, I did not come to criticize or to condemn, I came to forgive the sins of the whole world at the price of my own death. Behold your King, for three hours I hanged under that sign stating that I was the King of the Jews. But those who condemned me represent the whole human race; I am the King of all. All of you have condemned your King to death by your own sins. And yet as I was being tortured, I never held you responsible for my painful agony and death. I suffered all my pains, my wounds, and the loss of my blood as I was offering myself to the Father for your salvation. I am still waiting for you at the cross. It is there that I show my mercy to you; it is there that my suffering accuses you of my death but my mercy is ready to accept your guilt and I grant you eternal life. Come to me your crucified Lord and King, feel fear of God and know that I have the power to forgive you and to open the door to Paradise.
