We have seen how the sin of Pride was the cause of the fall of the rebellious angels, they lost their light forever. As spirits they can not die, but without light they exist in a world of darkness and death. The Lord has decided their fate, so they are to remain away from Him.
Adam and Eve committed the first sin, called the original sin. God had decreed that if they would disobey, they would die. So we are destined to die with them as punishment, and all human beings inherited the original sin, so the sentence of God takes place in us "You are dust and to dust you will return".
But God is merciful beyond our imagination and in His goodness He has sent His only begotten Son Our Lord Jesus Christ to the world to be the expiatory sacrifice for our sins, so that we may live and inherit eternal life.
Because of our sins, Jesus had to be crucified, so the gravity of our sin is that it crucifies the Son of God, who is the Word of God, God Himself made man.
So, to sin is to crucify God, not just to offend Him in a finite way, but to offend Him infinitely because our offence echoes for all eternity with the lamentations of Jesus crucified.
Who do we think we are? Being simple creatures, redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb of God we still continue being arrogant in imitation of the devil when we sin.
Sin is like a persistent weed, it grows continually by repetition. It multiplies out of control unless we repent. Temptations come very sweetly and entice us to cultivate the tree of death that is planted by sin, the seeds of evil produce little shoots, these grow strong and become vices, they overcome the goodness within us until we end up in the hands of the enemy [James 1:13-15].
No one sins against his will, so sin is a personal decision against the dictates of the conscience, which is the natural law that God has put in every heart.
The continuous repetition of sins creates a state of vice which is always the opposite of virtue. The main vices have been classified by tradition as capital sins. They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia.
