Before the coming of Christ, the message of Salvation was addressed to the Israelites, the people of God. They received the Word of God by the mouth of the prophets. The Jews kept the Law of Moses and they were looking forward to the coming of the Messiah who would deliver them from slavery. [Acts 3:22-23].
The righteous always stood out above the unrighteous in the eyes of the Lord, great holy men demonstrated their love for the Law of God and obeyed his commandments.
There were always those who defied the Lord by doing whatever they liked, sin has always been present and will always be until the last man who comes on this earth.
When the Messiah finally arrived, He was totally misunderstood, because the freedom that He brought was not physical but He delivered us from the slavery of sin. He came to free not only the Israelites but all those who believe in Him. He was put to death by his own people, but by His death we are all set free. Thanks be to God.
In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God
[Jn 1:1]
And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us
[Jn 1:14]
[Philippians. 2.10-11]
So that in honour of the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The Lord said to Moses, I will raise a prophet like you , one from your own people. He will speak in my name all that I command Him, I will put my own words in his mouth. If anyone does not listen to Him, that person will be cut off from his people.[Deuteronomy 18:15-19]
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel [Isaiah 7:14]
For a CHILD IS BORN to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace. [Isaiah 9:6]
Jesus described himself as the Messiah to the samaritan woman [John 4:25-26], then He publicly proclaimed that He was the Anointed One or the Messiah when He claimed this passage of holy Scripture: [ Luke 4:18-21] "The Spirit of the Lord is on me for He has anointed me, to preach the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to heal the contrite of heart, to preach deliverance to the captives and sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of reward".
The Messiah turns out to be the second person of the Holy Trinity,
the Word of God :
" In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God" [John 1:1] Jesus is man and He is also God. John
the Baptist learned from the Holy Spirit that Jesus was the lamb of God who takes
away the sins of the world.[John 1:36]
In the Old testament, God revealed his Holy name to Moses as He said: "I am who I am" [Exodus 3.14-15]. In the New Testament, Jesus claims the name of God for Him.
This is how Jesus described Himself: I am the way, the truth and the life [John 14:6 ], He He says that the Father and Him are one [John 10:30]
Thus says the Lord the king of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last, besides me there is no other God. [Isaiah. 44.6]
Revelation to St. John in the Apocalypse: [Jesus] I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, says the Lord God, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. [Apoc.1.8]
In the Old Testament Yahweh says: For I am the Lord your God, the
Holy One of Israel, your Saviour [Isaiah
43:3]
In the New Testament, the angel reveals to Joseph about the birth of Our Saviour through the Blessed Virgin Mary: "And she shall bring forth a son: and you shall call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins" [Matthew 1:21]
The Lord Yahweh says: I myself will be the Shepherd of my sheep [Ezekiel 34:15] ;
Jesus says I am the Good Shepherd [John 10:11-14]
