Importance of being in God’s presence
We are always in God’s presence wether we appreciate that consciously or not. In Him we move, live and have our being. But what is to be in the presence of God consciously?
The name of God is very powerful and holy. No wonder the Israelites were afraid to call God’s name, they were afraid of being exposed to Him. The name Yahweh is an English translation of the name of God without vowels in the Hebrew language. The Israelites didn’t want to pronounce the complete name of God, because they had holy fear of God.
We all know that He will view us naked, with our souls exposed showing our sinfulness, reading all our thoughts. When someone is doing something wrong he will try to avoid the offended person to stay away from conflict.
When we call someone the person must be within range otherwise we waste our time. However the smallest thought about God is enough to put us in contact with Him. For this reason His name is holy, for this reason if we love God we only have to call His name and He will be there.
This gives us a very powerful way to be in the presence of God. All we have to do is to think about Him and He is there. This powerful gift makes our lives being capable of sustaining a continuous relationship with God, and we may pray constantly as advised by Saint Paul (1 Thessalonians 5:17) pray without ceasing.
When we read the Holy Scriptures we read the Word of God because His Word was given to those who lived in His presence.
David was always in the presence of God, he spoke to Him constantly and he was always talking about God. He was completely saturated with God; this is a good example of someone who lived in the presence of God. If we start reading the psalms constantly we will learn a lot about God and about being in His presence.
We must become like little children (Matthew 18:3) Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
With the pure and innocent mind of a little child we should come into the presence of God, we really have to use our imagination because the spiritual world is concealed by the veil of our humanity. Once we overcome our intellectual pride we can invite Jesus to be in our hearts, to direct our lives, to comfort us, to admonish us, to help us, to accompany us in every small thing that we do. We then learn to share with Jesus all our experiences, we talk to Him and eventually we start receiving his conversation.
The soul that comes to this stage is very privileged because at this point, the Holy Spirit will start communicating through His promptings. Somehow we learn to know the will of God about different situations; we receive feelings in our hearts telling us what to do, we receive the call to pray for others, we invoke the power of God to do things, we pray in adoration, praise and thanksgiving, our relationship with God becomes something natural.
We feel extreme joy and peace by loving God and feeling loved by Him; we stop living for ourselves and start living for God. It no longer matters what situation we may find ourselves in, because we know that God is with us. (Psalm 23:1) A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Probably the biggest advantage of being in God’s presence is becoming like Him. This will happen because we are made in God’s image and He is very happy to reproduce the image of Christ in every one of us. Our immersion in God will saturate us with Him.
Another advantage is that we will have the courage to speak to Him confidently, so when the time comes we can ask and we will receive.
1 John 3:21-22
21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God;
22 and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.
